Make a simple site record
- Mark where the water appears and where it seems to come from.
- Note whether it happens during rain, snowmelt or everyday household use.
- Record existing culverts, ditches, catch basins and visible damage from a safe location.
- Mark your septic system and well on the sketch using existing records.
- Identify the proposed outlet and any road, neighbouring parcel or watercourse involved.
Check who controls the outlet
Work involving provincial highway rights-of-way can require a highway use permit. Start with the relevant road authority if the work touches a roadside ditch, driveway access or culvert. Confirm municipal or regional requirements for the actual parcel as well.

A design or specification can identify the pipe, catch basin, frame, grate or headwall required. Use manufacturer drawings to check dimensions and loading details with the project designer. Do not use a drywell or storm drain as an assumed substitute for a designed sewage system.
