Water & drainage / 4 MIN READ

Start your irrigation plan at the water source.

The useful first question is where the water comes from. A city connection, community water system and private well lead to different conversations.

On City water

Use the City’s current watering restrictions when setting an irrigation schedule. Check them again before starting the season or changing a controller, because restrictions can change. Ask your installer and the utility about the required backflow protection for the connection.

On a private well or other source

BC distinguishes domestic groundwater use from non-domestic use that requires licensing. Do not assume that every irrigation project falls into the same category. Ask FrontCounter BC about the proposed use when it is unclear; a pump purchase does not establish a water right.

Give the designer a useful brief

  • Water source and any supply restrictions.
  • What you are watering and a sketch of the proposed areas.
  • Existing pump, controller and valve model numbers.
  • Available supply information from your well record or utility.
  • What needs replacing versus what needs designing.
  • How the system will be shut down and protected seasonally.

Keep the well record with the project

The provincial GWELLS records can help assemble background information. Domestic well owners are encouraged to register their wells. A well record is background information, not a promise of the water available for your proposed irrigation demand.

Compare the Hunter PGV references in the catalog

The following distinctions come from Hunter’s model table. Confirm the controller and full valve configuration before ordering; a shared PGV family name does not make the models interchangeable.
