A septic plan for winter, thaw & the year ahead.

The useful seasonal routine starts with your own system’s maintenance plan. Keep a short record of what changes, what was serviced and who to call.

Use this to prepare your project. Property conditions and system requirements are confirmed by the responsible practitioner or authority.

Before freezing weather

HealthLinkBC advises keeping vehicles and snowmobiles off the system and discusses preserving insulating snow cover. Review site-specific frost protection and any long winter absence with the person responsible for the system’s care.

When the snow melts

Keep roof and perimeter drainage away from the dispersal area. If water ponds over it, seek advice from an authorized person rather than choosing a drainage fix from a catalog.

After flooding

Floodwater can affect the ground supporting a septic system and the safety of a private water supply. Seek qualified advice on restoration and water safety. Do not assume the system is ready to use because the water has receded.

Keep a useful maintenance record

BC requires owners to follow the maintenance plan and retain maintenance records. Keep dates, service reports, observations and recommended follow-up together. Ask the provider to clarify the service schedule for this system rather than adopting a universal pumping interval.

Record from a safe place

Never enter a septic tank. Tank atmospheres and access openings can be dangerous. Keep people away from open or damaged access points and arrange qualified service; use existing documents and safely visible external labels for product enquiries.
